Award-winning choirs to perform at Bishops in Cape Town
A number of great choral masterpieces performed by top South African choirs can be heard at Bishops College in Cape Town from 12 to 14 May. Inspiring works ranging from the gripping St John Passion by J.S. Bach to Sergei Rachmaninov’s haunting Vespers ('All-Night Vigil') can be heard.
Participating choirs include the Cape Soloists’ Choir, Tygerberg Children’s Choir, Cape Chamber Choir, Tygerberg City Choir and the Cape Town Youth Choir. Well-known choral conductors like Leon Starker, Hennie Loock, Jaco Dippenaar, Marijke Roos and Linda Claassen will lead their respective choirs with the internationally acclaimed, Norwegian choral pedagogue and conductor, Kåre Hanken, appearing as guest conductor.
The first not-to-be-missed concert on 12 May features maestro Hanken conducting the Cape Soloists Choir and Camerata Tinta Barocca in a performance of the St John Passion by JS Bach. For this performance, Hanken will include the original…… which is no often heard in concerts of the remarkable composition.
On 13 May, three choirs can be heard in a concert entitled ‘Romancing the Tone’ – the Tygerberg Children’s Choir conducted by Hennie Loock, the Tygerberg City Choir conducted by Linda Claassen and the Cape Town Chamber Choir conducted by Marijke Roos. In ‘Nature & Humankind’, the last concert on 14 May, the Cape Soloists Choir, conducted by Jaco Dippenaar, and Cape Town Youth Choir, conducted by Leon Starker can, be heard in performance.
With its amazing acoustics and ambiance, all concerts take place in the beautiful Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Bishops and start at 19h00.
This exciting mini choral festival forms part of the 2nd International Choral Conductors’ Seminar to be hosted in South Africa from 12–15 May. In 2014, it took place at the picturesque Hilton College in the Natal Midlands and this year it takes place at Bishops in Rondebosch, with yet another impressive faculty of international and local choral singing masters sharing their experience and expertise.
