ABOUT THE SHOW
God has abandoned Heaven. It's 1985: the Reagans are in the White House and Death swings the scythe of AIDS. In Manhattan, Prior Walter tells Lou, his lover of four years, he's ill; Lou bolts. As disease and loneliness ravage Prior, guilt invades Lou. Joe Pitt, an attorney who is Mormon and Republican, is pushed by right-wing fixer Roy Cohn toward a job at the Justice Department. Both Pitt and Cohn are in the closet: Pitt out of shame and religious turmoil, Cohn to preserve his power and access. Pitt's wife, Harper, is strung out on Valium, aching to escape a sexless marriage. An Angel invites Prior to be a prophet of death. Pitt's mother and Belize, a close friend, help Prior choose. Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson and Al Pacino starred in the recent HBO mini-series version. This play is a modern-day masterpiece in writing, wrapping up our three-play series on The Human Experience.

WHAT IS PLAY CLUB?
Play Club is Book Club for Theatre Lovers.
It is a Chase The Sun initiative, where we want to bring together Cape Town’s strongest theatre makers and host them in a neutral platform to discuss and debate about the future of theatre here. In essence, it’s a book club for theatre lovers. It’s a reading on hand, and it’s SO much more than a reading on the other – it’s a platform, it’s a forum, it’s a think tank; and it ultimately provides us with a catalyst as we make our forward strides into the theatre scene. Our ultimate goal is to see Cape Town theatre on an even greater global level and becoming Africa’s top destination for anything artistic. We believe that by infusing integrity and fearlessness, our shows will begin positively affecting all other theatre makers around us as we all begin producing fresh, brave, top-quality productions. Our panel is open to anyone in the theatrical community, but because of limits on space, is VIP and via invitation request. Our mix includes some of Cape Town’s top creative from the industry mixed with theatre lovers. For the industry, it’s a chance to build and grow, and for the drama student and theatregoer, it’s a chance to see and be a part of the creative process with pros.
We have also recently added a limited amount of additional seating for students and those interested in the creative process for professionals in the vein of "Inside The Actor's Studio." All participants of the evening will receive and take home a professionally bound copy of the script. Space is extremely limited. Book early.
Play Club began in November 2012 with Douglas Carter Beane’s bitingly funny THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED. Since that inaugural reading, Play Club has featured a wealth of South African premieres including the holiday hit IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY, the sensual INTIMATE APPAREL, the snowy charmer ALMOST, MAINE and most recently, the punked out DOG SEES GOD. Play Club has played host to some of Cape Town’s top and up-and-coming actors, directors, educators, filmmakers, producers, playwrights, composers, intermixed with theatregoers that share in their passion for the theatre. Its’ actors have performed on stages the world-over, won international acclaim in the US, the UK and in southern Africa and have been featured in hit shows on TV and film.
