Japan Day is a free, family-friendly cultural festival held annually to celebrate Japanese culture and promote cultural understanding between Japan and South Africa. The event will feature a variety of Japanese activities, performances, food and drink stalls, and more.

The theme of this year’s event is “Japanese New Year”, so get ready to experience elements of Japanese New Year’s culture and celebrations such as Mochi-Tsuki (New Year’s tradition whereby rice is pounded to make mochi (rice cakes)), Nengajyo (New Year’s card), New Year’s Decorations, Fukubukuro (lucky bag grab), and so much more!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Performances: Experience traditional Japanese performances such as Koto (Japanese Harp), Martial Arts (Karate, Aikido, Kyudo, Kenjutsu), a Cosplay Parade, Mochi-Tsuki (New Year's rice pounding), and Bon Odori (Japanese festival dance).
  • Cultural Exhibitions: Immerse yourself in the beauty of Japanese traditional arts and exhibitions such as bonsai (miniature trees), bonsan (miniature gardens), sumi-e (ink wash painting), and Japanese dogs.
  • Japanese Cuisine: Savour the flavours of Japan with a wide array of Japanese dishes and street food vendors selling takoyaki, onigiri, mochi, yakitori, dorayaki, and more!
