A Captivating Evening of Opera, Tango, and Zarzuela with renowned Soprano Zanne Stapelberg and acclaimed Pianist Prof. Albie van Schalkwyk.
Prepare to be enchanted as celebrated South African soprano Zanne Stapelberg and distinguished pianist Prof. Albie van Schalkwyk take the stage for an evening of opera, Spanish Zarzuela, timeless tango, and beloved musical theatre classics. This unmissable recital will unfold amidst the idyllic setting of Manley Wine Estate on Saturday, 30 November, offering audiences an evening of deeply evocative and soulful music.
Described by critics as a "national treasure," Zanne will lend her magnetic stage presence and deeply expressive voice to iconic arias, including Puccini’s heart-rending "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi and Delibes’ sensuous “Mon Coeur” from Samson and Delilah.
The recital’s Spanish offerings are bound to thrill, featuring the vivacious Zarzuela aria "Las Hijas del Zebedeo" from Carceleras by Ruperto Chapí, alongside Astor Piazzolla's passionate tango “Milonga de la Anunciación” from María de Buenos Aires, and the much-loved Besame Mucho by Consuelo Velasquez. Broadway and musical theatre enthusiasts will also be delighted by selections like “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady and the timeless classic “My Funny Valentine” from Babes in Arms.
Sharing the stage is the renowned Prof. Albie van Schalkwyk, a true master of musical partnership with over 30 years of experience. A leading figure in South African chamber music and vocal accompaniment, Prof. van Schalkwyk brings both sensitivity and technical brilliance to his craft. He has performed widely as a soloist, ensemble musician, and accompanist, and has contributed significantly to music education and competition adjudication across the country. His extensive experience also includes international work as a répétiteur in Salzburg, Austria, and arranging orchestral and musical theatre works, all of which lend a rich depth to his performances.
Music critics say of Zanne’s performances: Zanne Stapelberg will mesmerize you, entice you, cajole you, and ensnare you in her captivating recital of Spanish songs... Stapelberg uses every possible vocal inflection and fiber in her being to interpret a range of Spanish songs with fervor and alluring theatricality. This is not mere singing; it is drama emanating right from the core of her sensibilities... The zeal with which Stapelberg approaches her work proves that she does not see her craft as a job or a calling – it is far more than that – her passion for performance is the essential ingredient in her life. She remains one of South Africa’s most prolifically talented and engaging artists.
This evening promises to be a feast for the senses, as two of South Africa's most esteemed musical talents join forces to create an intimate, spellbinding journey through some of the world's most cherished musical masterpieces.
