A born and bred Durban girl, her career started in the 1980s as the lead singer of Hotline, a band that blazed a trail, touring through a tumultuous South Africa on the back of songs that have been indelibly stamped into the psyche of the nation. “Feel so Strong,” “Jabulani,” “There is an Answer” and many more. It was during this period that she was given the name “Thandeka” by her adoring fans.
She then went on to pursue a solo career that flourished during the 1990s and 2000s and saw her travel the world performing in concerts and at events including the proud moment when she sang the, now internationally famous, “World in Union” at the rugby world cup.
Her most recent hits include chart-topping singles such as “Destiny,” “Stay” and the recently penned “Just Breathe” and “Born to an Audience.” She is presently in the studio working on her sixth solo album which promises to bring forth a batch of new hits.
She has performed for Kings and Queens, Presidents and Prima Donnas, Vagabonds and Ne’er do wells for hundreds of thousands of music lovers during a lifetime of playing for the audiences she loves. She has shared the stage with a long list of musicians from near and far. Artists like as Eric Clapton, Johnny Clegg, Joan Armatrading, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, the Mahotella Queens, Youssou N Dour, Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, The Corrs and Mike and the Mechanics.
The Just Breathe Tour sees Powers starting to tour again after almost a year of lockdown. She is bound to get back to enchanting audiences wherever she goes.
As someone that Madiba held close to his heart, Powers was asked to write the official song for her beloved ‘Tata’ on his 85th birthday which she sang to him and a host of luminaries during the internationally broadcast celebration.
She teams up on Saturday the 13th of Feb with her long-time guitarist and side-man, Knysna’s own Tigger Reunert and they will be at Blend Country Restaurant from 7pm.
