ABOUT
South African born Jazz Trumpeter and Composer, Lwanda Gogwana is a 3 time 2012 SAMA award nominee for Best Jazz, Best Newcomer and Male artist of the year for his debut album, Songbook Chapter 1. In 2016 he released his 2nd album, Uhadi Synth.
In January 2020, Gogwana featured as trumpeter and arranger for the Khaya Mahlangu Big Band at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. In December 2018 he was selected to be a part of the organizing committee of the South African Jazz and Health Alliance(SAJHA) youth jazz camp. Gogwana was trumpeter and part of the composing and arranging team for the legendary South African Jazz opera, King Kong who’s original musical score was composed by the great jazz pianist and composer Todd Matshikiza.
As a composer, Gogwana’s compositions have been featured in radio adverts and numerous Mzansi Bioskop Movies on the satellite dish, DSTV. Gogwana continues to work as a composer, trumpeter and jazz educator..
Some of the musicians and bands Gogwana has worked with include Ray Phiri, LIRA, Jimmy Dludlu, Mafikizolo, Jonas Gwangwa, jazz pianist Tete Mbambisa, Simphiwe Dana, McCoy Mrubata, Monique Bingham, TRESOR and the Standard Bank Young Artist Award recipients Siya Makuzeni, Afrika Mkhize, Kyle Shepherd’s Quintet and Bokani Dyer’s big band tour to Gaborone, Botswana in November 2017.
