ABOUT

Love celebrated in oboe, piano recital

Robert Schumann is often considered as one of the doyens in the art of German song from the 19th century. Plagued by mental health challenges, he received unwavering support from his wife, Clara Schumann, also a composer and celebrated performer. The timeless and charming melodies that each of them constructed for songs, or “Lieder”, are reinvigorated in this recital through the voice of the oboe together with piano. In addition to selections from the “Liederkreis” by Robert Schumann, songs from Clara Schumann’s pen are also brought to the forefront and further complemented by a set of three Romances by each of these composers. This recital is the second by SparkDuo, consisting of Johan Ferreira (oboe) and Laetitia Orlandi (piano), which includes songs originally for soprano or baritone but represented in a refreshing way for the oboe. Previous appearances of SparkDuo include Wakkerstroom, Johannesburg, Klerksdorp, and Pretoria – and this recital, “Love in the time of the Schumanns – of love and lieder for oboe and piano” will rediscover magical elements that the Schumanns interwove with inspiration from nature, love, and longing. Tickets are available from the NWU School of Music for this recital on Tuesday 3 May 2022 at 18h30 at the Conservatory Hall in Thabo Mbeki Drive, Potchefstroom.

Liefde seevier in hobo, klavier uitvoering
