ABOUT
Join us for the next Cape Town Squad Movie Night at the Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel on May 25th at 6:30pm. This event is for actors, filmmakers and movie lovers and is organized by filmmakers. The theme is Best of SUPP and you will watch some of the Best Films on their platform from South Africa and meet the directors in the Q&A.
This is an evening of movies, meeting filmmakers and enjoying food & drink specials on the scenic rooftop of Cape Town's legendary Grand Daddy Hotel. The screening will include the behind the scenes videos of the films as well as an exclusive Q&A (Live and Virtual) with the filmmakers.
SUPP is a unique streaming platform for local artists to earn revenue from their productions.
You the viewer have access to fresh home-grown entertainment and have a role in developing our film industry.
The following films will be screening with Q/A with filmmakers:
21TH Street directed by Kelsey Egan (Director of Glasshouse) (Drama)
Johannesburg, 1993. Meat sizzles on an open braai. An Afrikaans girl watches her father shatter an empty bottle. She takes a plastic bag filled with broken glass and follows her baby brother up a rickety ladder. They perch on top of the wall. She dips a spade into an ice cream tub; slaps a layer of wet cement between her knees. Her brother hands her a shard of glass; she wedges it into the cement. He plays catch with a piece. She eyes a passerby warily. The glass slips through her brother's fingers, falls at the passerby's feet. He picks it up; hands it back.
Izilwane directed by Killian Roux (Cannes Short Film Corner) (Drama)
Izilwane is a hard hitting social drama about a homeless woman who dreams of a better life for her and her 6 year old brother. When Kgosi goes missing, Grace tracks him down by way of the usual suspects only to be faced with a difficult decision.
Parcel directed by Brett Williams and Hayden Phipps (Horror/Suspense)
The haunting tale of a suburban man's encounter with a mysterious parcel that changes his fate.
Last Laughter Guru directed by Paula Zapata (Dark comedy) (Nominated for Female Filmmaker of the Year, & Best Score at the LA48HFP 2021)
In a world where laughter is hard to come by, a dysfunctional family kidnaps a laughter guru to make them laugh.
Birth of a Karen by Looped Pictures directed by Nadiya Jooma and Jaco van Bosch (Comedy)
Being referred to as a "Karen" is a term reserved for a stereotyped character in society who is epitomised as "a middle-aged white woman with an asymmetrical bob asking to speak to the manager, who happens to be as entitled as she is ignorant". The term is problematic but gets a playful send up in The Birth of a Karen, as a "Karen" gets her daughter to face up to a delivery guy who's just trying to do his job. When they unbox the product and it's broken, a comical scenario ensues as a Karen-in-training takes the wheel. This zippy short film features Laré Birk as Mom and captures the fun through its upbeat performances and lively banter, turning a typical suburban situation into a spunky representation of a voiceless "Karen" and her protégé.
