New York 1912 – 4 boudoirs:
Against the backdrop of ragtime music and moonshine, black women’s lives intersect with Jewish-Romanian and Caribbean immigrants and a rich socialite. The making and wearing of exotic lingerie, ‘intimate apparel’, is what binds these characters together. Playwright Lynn Nottage explores issues of sisterhood, race, class and intimacy in this moving play, which follows a seamstress’ struggle for love and respectability.
