ABOUT
The Vocal Museum is a recital, a journey into collective memory, a live tribute to South African musicians created and performed by Masello Motana, backed by a live band. The Vocal Museum is the ultimate authentic musical experience that celebrates a township childhood through song.
As South Africa celebrates many years of democracy, The Vocal Museum is a show that gives us a window into the experiences and memories of many a music lover and collector in the various locations in our multilingual and multicultural society.
The Vocal Museum is a follow-up and expansion to Masello's Ntyilo Ntyilo, a South African Song Book aimed to honor our musical heritage.
"It was around 2015 or 2016 when I first encountered Masello Motana’s performance which she names the Vocal Museum. The venue was the Afrikan Freedom Station in Westdene. The Station often felt like a cross-section of the cultural denizens from the Yeoville, Newtown and post-2010 eras. The performance traversed through various eras in South African music from the 1950’s to the present. Masello’s arrangements presented old standards in a fresh, provocative way, like the way she rendered Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s standard Yakhal’ Inkomo, in a reggae beat. Her musicality and deft movement between nostalgia, social realism and historicism inspired one person in the audience to declare for all to hear" Khwezi Gule
The Vocal Museum is lined up for a 1 night only show featuring Mak Manaka as Onkgopotse Tiro. The lineup features two Djs Manjik Mak and Buntu.
We hope to see you there!
