The Tradouw area is rich in history. The original word ‘Tradauw’ is derived from the Khoikhoi words tarras (path) and dua (women) which means 'footpath of the women'. The Khoisan women’ used to trek through the valley barefoot, child on back, trading their products on the coast at Witsand and the Breederivier. To commemorate their legacy, we cycle, run and walk through the valley appreciating the breathtaking scenery and nature, saluting them and allowing their legacy to live on.
The Tradouw, Tarras dua, cycle loop, situated in the magical Tradouw Valley allows for cyclists, runners, walkers and hikers to experience this beautiful valley in all its splendor. The trail runs parallel to the R62 (the longest wine route in the world) alongside the mighty Langeberg mountains. The trail begins in the village of Barrydale at the Karoo Art Hotel with a coffee and bagel. From there it makes its way through fruit farms and vineyards up to the Op-de-Tradouw pass where it loops back through farmlands to the village.
The trail has three distance options with breakout routes which allows riders, runners and hikers to experience different activities along the way for example a glass of classic Joubert-Tradauw Chardonnay with an Alfresco Deli tapas lunch or a gin tasting at the new distillery.
