ABOUT

Maskandi king "Bafo" started busking on Durban’s beach-front at the age of 7, making his first guitar out of a cooking oil tin and fish gut for the strings, soon becoming a popular performer in the townships.[1][2]

Kunene's music interest was triggered at an early age. He started busking at Durban's beach front at the age of 7. His music is influenced by his upbringing and the history of the apartheid system which saw him being a victim of forced removal as a young person. Kunene was discovered by Sipho Gumede who brought him to Johannesburg where he shared the stage with world renowned musicians such as Hugh Masakela, Winston Mankunku Ngozi and Busi Mhlongo. His style is Maskandi which is "the music played by the man on the move, the modern minstrel, todays troubadour. It is the music of the man walking the long miles to court a bride or to meet with his chief"

Bafo doesn't play often. Don't miss this concert
