ABOUT
“South African Jazz In Frame” is a tribute to not only South African jazz musicians from past to present but also highlighting the photographers who documented their iconic performances . This performance/exhibition is presented by Lauren Hendricks a young musician/photographer and final year masters in jazz studies at the University of Cape Town focusing her thesis on the relationship of SA Jazz musicians and photographers and combining the two art forms to create a special evening of music and imagery.
“My intent behind this performance/exhibition is to delve into the creative process of seeing South African Jazz music documented in imagery through the eyes of a young jazz musician myself . My aim is to bring recognition to the unseen heroes/heroines of South African Jazz photography as an art form and bring into focus the extreme importance of contribution to the genre of jazz .This performance is a musical representation of a captured moment in time. A meeting point between audio and visual art forms holding the space ”
This selection of South African Jazz repertoire has specifically been paired to selected images by local photographers from an exhibition by Lauren Hendricks at the Youngblood Gallery . The evening will feature musical works by legends such as Sibongile Khumalo to Carlo Mombelli to young artists such as Sean Sanby and Muneeb Hermans while featuring the photographic works of Gregory Franz, Jeffery Abrahams, Jonathon Rees and Lauren Hendricks . An evening of new experience of live music and artwork that is not to be missed.
