South Africa’s “Barefoot Astronomer”, makes sense of the SKA, a mega-science project, that which will push the limits of engineering and scientific endeavour over the coming decades.

Building the SKA will require the development of cutting edge technology and innovation, including the design of the world’s fastest supercomputers to process data at rates greater than the current global internet traffic. The SKA will use thousands of radio antennas, with different antenna technologies. This will enable astronomers to probe the universe in unprecedented detail. The SKA project is an international effort comprising organizations from ten countries. In addition, a further 100 or so organizations from 20 countries have been participating in the design and development. Simon and his team have also become very adept at hacking equipment to manufacture products that didn’t exist before…

The LaunchLab, an initiative of Innovus, is a mixed-use business incubator based at Stellenbosch University that supports mainly technology and innovation businesses in ICT (specifically Payments &; Big Data and Paid Media), Cleantech, Agriculture and Education.
Although the main LaunchLab facility is based on Stellenbosch University campus, the LaunchLab programmes are open to all entrepreneurs in the Western Cape and beyond and are actively running on other partner campuses. Our speakers will tell us about all the latest – from nutbutters to SpaceCubes, and everything in between.

African Robotics creates interactive electronic “street art”. Well known in South Africa, street artists make all forms of handicraft using inexpensive materials like fencing and electrical wire, beads and waste wood, plastic and metal. With the robotic prototype, Ralph created a starling, running on a Nokia phone battery. It incorporates a sound-synthesizer whose pitch depends on light exposure, glowing LED eyes, and head and wing movement via a cheap hacked

In 2012, a visit to the Parisian salon of Coco Chanel stirred a deep desire in Jackie to create a space where women could come together, talk about style, taste and beauty. Salon 58 was born, and will host its seventh Salon this month. Jackie tells us about her travels across South Africa, talking with women who create community in their towns and villages. Jackie reflects on the maker movement, and how handiwork, craft and embellishment celebrate and elevate the ordinary into extraordinary.
