ABOUT
The Buckfever Underground was formed by Gilad Hockman and Toast Coetzer while they were students back in 1998. At times a five-piece, the band currently plays as a trio with Toast on vocals, Stephen Timm on drums and Righard Kapp on guitar.
In its various guises, the band has been a leading light on the underground spoken word scene in South Africa, playing festivals like Oppikoppi, Woordfees, KKNK and others. They have released many albums, EPs and informal CD-Rs of which ‘Jou Medemens Is Dood’ (1999, containing the cult classic, “Die Volk Is In Die Kak”), The Buckfever Underground SAVES (2007) and Verkeerdevlei (2012) helped to establish their reputation as a band that strives to break new ground.
Their recent releases have varied from the delicate, phone-recorded Covid-bound songs of ‘Satelliet’ (composed by guitarist Mike Currin) to collaborations with Cape Town legends Paul Opie (bass) and Alex Bozas (guitar) on the single “Die Nagorno-Karabakh-blues” to the double live album ‘Last Days Of Beautiful’ which possibly contains the most detailed ode to the N1 ever written in the 50 minute long “Eating The Land”.
Their latest album ‘Voortvlugtend’ was released in October 2022 and is out now on Bandcamp.
