ABOUT
Live Art Network Africa (LANA) was formed in 2018 to promote and support Live Art on the African Continent. Live Art, sometimes known as Performance Art, is a practice by both visual and performing artists.
Gathering is a meeting of Live Art practitioners, producers, curators, writers and audience members in an inter-disciplinary event comprising conference sessions, punctuated by seminal performances.
Conference sessions will engage with critical themes around the development and sustainability of Live Art in Africa from such overarching topics as the nurturing of Pan African Contexts to Live Art education and residencies. There will also be the first presentation of the LANA website, a resource and platform for amplifying Live Art from the continent and the diaspora, prior to its official launch later this year. Speakers include N’Goné Fall, Khanyisile Mbongwa, Jelili Atiku, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Divine Fuh, Mlondi Zondi, Refilwe Nkomo and Jay Pather. Sessions will be held around round tables to encourage small group discussion following input by speakers.
Performances are by Zora Snake (Cameroon), Bernard Akoi-Jackson (Ghana), Kenza Berrada (Morocco), Salim Djaferi (Algeria/Belgium), and Jelili Atiku (Nigeria). From South Africa, the programme includes Qondiswa James and collaborative works by Nelisiwe Xaba and Mocke Jansen Van Veuren; Albert Ibokwe Khoza and Princess Zinzi Mhlongo; and Meghna Singh and Simon Wood. Besides emerging from several locations on the continent, these works reflect a wide range of Live Art practices – ritual based works, activist work, site specificity, lecture performances, city walks, mixed media installation and the incorporation of digital technologies.
