When Bloke Modisane had to leave South Africa in 1953 - which South African jazz records, which Sophiatown sounds might have been in his suitcase? We commissioned two sonic artists - Muntu Vilakazi and Robert Machiri - to imagine what could have been the soundtrack of a journey, an exile, a dislocation.
On the 6th of April 2023, we start with an evening with Muntu Vilakazi and friends. We soundtrack the routes of Sophiatown writers and time-travel in the 20th and 21st century. Join us from 4pm onwards at the Sophiatown Arts Akademy, Brixton.
