PRESENTERS, SHORT BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION, PRESENTATION TOPIC AND DESCRIPTION | ESTELLE BRETTENNY B. OT.; M. OT.; PDME Estelle Brettenny is an occupational therapist in private practice and an independent trainer and consultant with 38 years of clinical experience. She is an experienced and certified trainer in the mediation of thinking skills and has been a board member of The International Association for Cognitive Education (IACESA) for about two decades. In 2017, she contributed a chapter titled, Critical Thinking on the Road of Life (For optimal Health and Well-Being), to a book on Critical Thinking (edited by Prof. Mary Grosser). PRESENTATION: 8 Thinking Mistakes that even Smart Professionals make that can lead to Chronic Disease and Prevent Optimal Health Good thinking must go on the road of life with us. Paul and Elder (2014) argue that no matter what your circumstances or goals are, no matter where you are or what problems you must deal with, you are better off if you have skilled thinking. If you cannot think critically your survival is in peril. Optimal well-being on the road of life is one of the most important topics that require high quality critical thinking as our health span (length of time an individual lives a disease-free life) might not equal our life span (total amount of time spent living, regardless of health status) (Bland, 2014). Our daily decisions on the road of life about diet, exercise and other lifestyle behaviours have a direct effect on our optimal well-being and the optimal well-being of other people. Even smart professionals make thinking mistakes that can lead to chronic disease that is the biggest challenge of the 21st century. This presentation will aim to create a deeper awareness of the importance of critical thinking (and non-critical thinking) and optimal well-being. The presentation will also briefly contextualize the conference.

Being present to oneself and one’s surroundings is necessary for an integrated and healthy life. We need to learn to ‘be present’ but cannot just be present and let life happen to us; we must make choices. Discernment is an embodied tool which we can use to make more conscious decisions. This presentation will give some of the key ideas around discernment. Most important is the practice of noticing. Noticing what happens when I encounter something. Noticing what draws me and what repels me. Noticing the sense of resonance in my body. Discernment gives the embodiment to mindfulness - allowing mindfulness to shift from being a 20-minute daily practice to a real connection with the source of life which permeates through all activity.
