African Gumbo Fest 2023 - Seya Injabulo!

African Gumbo is conceptualized this year around the ancestral forces of community and joy.

Rather than digging up graves to move the body, it seeks to engage performers and audiences with the multiple ways in which a dance production can evoke community engagement and feelings of Black joy.

African Gumbo Fest is more than a dance production; it is a gathering of the village to share stories by the fire, dance together, play childhood games, eat some food, and make rhythms that vibrate through the body in movement and vocal text.

Its title Seya Injabulo! literally translates as joy in Soninke (a Mande language of West Africa) and isiZulu respectively.

African joy is magic!
