ABOUT

CTyC hosts one of the USA's premier university choirs, the University of Louisville Cardinal Singers (conducted by Kent Hatteberg) in an a capella concert in one of the very best acoustic spaces in Cape Town, the Centre for the Book.

The University of Louisville Cardinal Singers (Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A.) was founded in 1970 under the name University Singers as an outreach organization for the University of Louisville. Dr. Hatteberg began conducting the Singers in 1997 and changed the name of the ensemble to Cardinal Singers in 1998.

The Singers continue their outreach mission locally, nationally, and internationally, offering workshops, performing at choral conventions, festivals, and symposia, and competing on the international stage. Recent festival highlights include performances at the Seoul Oratorio Festival (Korea 2019), the Xi’an International Choral Festival (Xi’an, China, 2017), the 13th China International Choral Festival (Beijing, China, 2016), the Taipei International Choral Festival (Taiwan, 2015, 2010), the Singapore International Choral Festival (2015), the Cuba/United States Choral Symposium (Havana, 2012)

Recent competition performances include the Magdeburg Internationales Chorfest (Germany 2022), the 11th International Choir Competition Zadar (Croatia, 2018), the Harmonie Festival (Germany 2017), the Yeosu International Choir Competition (Korea, 2013), the Vietnam International Choir Competition (Xi' An 2013), the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition, the Harmonie Festival, and the 9th Internationale Chortage Mainhausen (Germany, 2011).

CTyC was privileged to be part of the "Esenvalds Festival Choir" during the recent Choral Conductor's Conference in Cape Town. Under the direction of Eriks Esenvalds himself, they prepared and performed a number of his compositions, which they will repeat in this concert.

CTyC will perform the following repertoire in the first half of the concert:

  • Kyrie (Gregorian chant from the Trent Codex)
  • Ancient Prairie (Eriks Esenvalds)
  • Rivers of Light (Eriks Esenvalds)
  • The Heaven's Flock (Eriks Esenvalds)
  • Only in Sleep (Eriks Esenvalds)
  • uNonqawuse (Bongani Magatyana)
