Former lead singer of the critically acclaimed pan-African supergroup Freshlyground, Zolani Mahola is The One Who Sings. 

The band was together for 17 years and produced 6 albums and most famously collaborated with Shakira on the song “Waka Waka” in 2010 and is known for uniting audiences across the world across boundaries of race, age or gender. In her work with Freshlyground, Mahola has shared and opened stages for greats such as Stevie Wonder, Hugh Masekela, Shakira, Johnny Clegg, BB King and many others. 

In 2019 she officially announced the launch of her solo career as a musician, storyteller and public speaker and relaunched herself under her new Artis name The One Who Sings. 

At café Roux this June she presents her new band The Feminine Force

Says The One Who Sings: “The Feminine Force is a feeling. It is the distilling of the ancient force of women dancing and singing long into the night. It is the awakening of the modern medicine woman reclaiming her place in the world as she remembers her roots. It is the journey of the lonely one finding her way to a feeling of safety with other women, finding her voice in the force of song with her sisters. Creating safety within the feminine. And showing the extraordinary power we have individually and as a collective.”

Stylistically and intrinsically non-binary, the music is at once uplifting, fierce, sacred, gentle, rocking and deeply rooted in the indigenous feminine force of our land eMzantsi. It is indigenous to South Africa and it touches on the pain and tremendous strength of the global feminine force. 

It is beautiful it is handsome it is strong it is resilient it is tender it is wounded it is rising … and it is all in all.

The Feminine Force lineup at café Roux will includes Sky Dladla - is an African music multi-instrumentalist and UCT African Music Department graduate. An acolyte of the late Xhosa maestro of the African bow Dr Madosini, Sky plays a variety of traditional Xhosa instruments, percussion and marimba. She also makes traditional instruments and is a teacher to young African music instrumentalists. 

Also in the force is Genevieve Lee; a 23 year old guitarist and opera-trained Capetonian musician. Her lineage is Celtic and she draws from these old traditions as well as from her strong ties with the medicine music of the Amazon tribe the Huni Kuin.  

The last of the women to accompany The One Who Sings onstage at Cafe Roux is Cal Thompson; 30 year old bassist, guitarist, pianist, banjo player and singer. No stranger to an all femme ensemble she was formerly in a band called the Fishwives in Grahamstown. She is passionate about music education and co-founded the Cape Town based organization The Mobile Music Academy.
