ABOUT

BlkGrlzRize is a Documentary Series launched in 2018, by creative entrepreneur and musician Lerato ‘Ato Song’ Moloto-Moraka (previously Moiloa).

The inspiration behind documentary series was inspired by the life and the crossing over of the insurmountably brave, loyal, and humble human rights struggle stalwart - Mama Nomzamo Winfred Madikizela-Mandela.

It sought to pay homage to the great contribution that she made and the socio-political and economic changes she fought for to her very last breath on earth.

This episode aims to highlight the stories and plights of queer black womxn of colour in the African context, celebrate their victories, and document their socio-political and economic contributions to the history that future generations

of queer womxn will refer back to.

The episode is a sequel to Episode1 titled “I Wrote A Letter”(2018) in which the director of the doccie-film pays homage to the life of Mama Winnie and declares that the “signal” from our honourable commander Mama Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela - the signal to multiply, to unapologetically elevate the presence of womxn of colour across industries and societal areas of influence.

This second episode of the series also addresses the question posed by viewers of episode 1 of the series about:

WHO the movement of #BlkGrlzRize is dedicated to.

WHO does it include?

WHO does the umbrella of BlkGrlzRize aim to shelter and benefit?

It was only fitting that the follow-up of the 18-minute freshman episode of the documentary series was dedicated to African queer bodies who identify as womxn - to emphasize inclusivity, empathy, diversity, and representation within the African liberation movement.

The letter referred to n the title of the episode is one of gratitude, of admiration and one that contains in its contents- the promise to raise the urgency to collaborate, to prioritize unity of division, and to take up space and document our own stories in our own words, using our own too. The revolution of womxn will be etched into history!
