Join us for Nechama Cape Town's 10th seminar to be held on the 28th of August 2023 at the Double Tree Hotel in Woodstock for a day of inspiration and learning.
We will be hearing from a promising lineup of presenters who will share of their knowledge and experience ranging from personal stories of coping with grief to accounts by mental health experts, medical doctors, authors and community leaders. Dr Clint Cupido - Panelist - Maintaining Compassion as a Supporter of the Bereaved
Dr Cupido is the head of department of medicine at Victoria Hospital as well as a senior lecturer in the departments of medicine and family medicine at UCT. He heads the Abundant Life Palliative Care Program at Victoria Hospital where he has recently partnered with Nechama to initiate a bereavement counselling service for families of patients at the unit.
Professor David Edwards - Bereavement: The Challenge of Saying Goodbye
Professor Edwards is an Emeritus Professor at Rhodes University in South Africa, where, for over 25 years, he taught cognitive behavioural therapy (including schema therapy) to trainee clinical and counselling psychologists. He also taught group therapy and offered intensive workshops to students using expressive therapies including psychodrama, clay sculpture, drawing and dance. Since his retirement, at the end of 2009, he continues to work as a researcher and research supervisor. He is a Clinical Psychologist in South Africa and the United Kingdom and has an active private practice offering psychotherapy. Through the Schema Therapy Institute of South Africa, he presents basic and advanced training workshops and supervision in schema therapy locally and internationally. He has over 100 academic publications in the form of journal articles and book chapters. The focus of many of these is psychotherapy for trauma and complex trauma.
Dr Anthony Jackson - No Feeling is Final
Dr Jackson is a specialist general surgeon, currently in private practice at Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital. He is married to Sara-Lee and they have 3 children between them.
Ariella Kuper - Faith, Cancer & the Power of Inner Healing
Ariella is SA’s leading female auctioneer since 2007. She has raised over R120 million for charity; her latest auction for Gaynor Rupert’s Imibala Trust raised an unprecedented R11.5 million in under 2 hours. In 2019, after surviving a 2nd of 3 occurrences of cancer, Ariella founded Solution Strategists, continuing to specialize in global sales of arrested maritime ships in both South Africa & Namibia. Ariella remains in demand as a leadership speaker on women in business, adversity to opportunity and consults to banks regularly on distressed commercial matters given her experience in the varying sectors.
Linda Lewis - Mindful Meditation
Linda Lewis is a psychologist, author and meditation teacher, currently studying Mindful Meditation through U.C. Berkeley. Linda is specialised in postnatal depression and has a book published on the subject: "When Your Blessings Don't Count: A Guide to Recognising and Overcoming Postnatal Distress". Linda is a longstanding volunteer facilitator at Nechama and runs a Personal Growth Group for Nechama frequently.
Carin Marcus - Walking Alongside Children through Grief & Loss Whilst Grieving Oneself
Panelist - Maintaining Compassion as a Supporter of the Bereaved
Carin is a clinical social worker and Logotherapist with a special interest in grief, loss, oncology and palliative care. She has worked tirelessly in the field and has had experience in hospice, assisting at schools, employment settings, hospitals and educating on many platforms. Carin has contributed
to books and games for children and adolescents dealing with grief and illness.
Kumi Naidoo - Loss & the Power of Living with Purpose
Kumi has been an activist for social, economic and environmental justice for over 40 years. He has moved from his humble township upbringing in KwaZulu Natal to having been an International Executive Director of Greenpeace, Secretary General of Amnesty International and Global Ambassador for Africans Rising for Justice, Peace & Dignity. An author as well, Kumi is now dedicating himself to getting back to his 'roots', with a focus on contributing more to the growth of activism movements and organisations, academia, as well as paving the way forward for a new generation of activists.
Sarit Swisa - Panel Chair - Maintaining Compassion as a Supporter of the Bereaved
Sarit is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Cape Town. She is also the counselling services coordinator at Nechama and offers supervision and training in the organisation.
Rabbi Sam Thurgood - Panelist - Maintaining Compassion as a Supporter of the Bereaved
Rabbi Sam is the Head of Jewish Life and Learning at United Herzlia Schools. He previously served as Rabbi of Beit Midrash Morasha (Arthur's Road Shul) in Sea Point for 10 years. He came to community and education through his passion to care for people and has always seen his Rabbinic role in the lives of his members during bereavement as one of his most sacred tasks. He is married to Aviva, a physiotherapist, and has four beautiful children from ages 3-10.
Kelsey Buchalter - Closing Performance
Kelsey Buchalter is a nutrition advisor, health-coach, host of “The Human Theatre” podcast, TEDx speaker, singer-songwriter and actor. She combines her professional background in musical theatre and the performing arts with her professional background and passion for health. After navigating her way through severe anorexia, bulimia and anxiety, she has made it her life’s mission to educate, share, assimilate and raise awareness about all things mental and physical health optimisation - no one was born to suffer, and everyone has a birthright to optimal health
