The Dante Quartet

ABOUT

The Dante Quartet is among the finest ensembles in the United Kingdom, known for its imaginative programming and impassioned performances. The Quartet was founded in 1995 and chose its name to reflect the idea of an epic journey. The Quartet is formed by two South African violinists, Zoë Beyers and Ian Watson, and UK violist Carol Ella and cellist Richard Jenkinson. They have performed widely within the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland and has twice toured Japan. The Quartet has been honoured with the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Chamber Music and has also received international awards for its recordings.

This concert at Old Nectar gardens historic wine cellar in Jonkershoek will feature Haydn’s quartet known by the English nickname "Sunrise" which opens with the sustained glow of a single, soft chord over which a solo violin slowly traces the rising sun. Also on the programme is Beethoven’s masterful String Quartet No. 7, Op. 59 no. 1 (Razumovsky) alongside a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw titled Plan and Elevation written to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Dumbarton Oaks, the historic garden, research institute, library and museum at Harvard University located in Washington, DC.

The concert on Sunday 15 October start at 4pm and will last approximately 2 hours. Tickets are available from Quicket for R200 per person and includes selected wines from Banhoek’s renowned Oldenburg Wine Estate and finger food at interval. Student / learner tickets are offered at R50 per concert at the door. Guests are invited to come early or stay after the concert to enjoy Spring in the Old Nectar gardens.
