The Nova Festival for New, Young and Original Theatre, Scenario College and Die Centurion Teater presents:
New Voice, New Theatre Line-up!
Original, New and Devised plays by Young, Upcoming and Student Artists, presented back-to-back on the Centurion Theatre stage from 3 - 5 July 2023.
The Nova Festival aims to support, encourage and showcase the next generation of artists and theatre-makers, that will bring the South African Theatre industry to the new age.
With six (6) original productions, from One-Man Plays, Devised Works, Physical Theatre and Dance, Performance Art and more, these young, upcoming and student artists make their voices known in a stellar line-up of original theatre.
These talented new artists invite you to a night of theatre, throught-provoking moments and inspiration.
Time: 17h30 - 21h30 (Six Back-to-back Productions with 15-20min intermissions between, all on one stage)

Line-up / Program:
1. Not I (A devised work directed by Marlon Rossouw with Cara-May Drummond)
In the haunting debut of "Not I” viewers enter the eerie halls of Hawthorne Asylum, where Anna grapples with her unpredictable mental health. As the line between reality and illusion grows dangerously thin, she must confront unsettling secrets lurking within the her own life. With each harrowing twist, Anna's grip on reality slowly unravels, exposing a world where nothing is as it seems. Will Anna find a way to navigate the ever-shifting shadows of her mind, or will she succumb to the gripping darkness that threatens to consume her? "Not I” is a chilling exploration of mental health, self-discovery, and the fragility of one's own sanity.
2. Mila's Song (A devised work directed by Chané-Louise Bornman with Elsmarie Serfontein and Ora Mashigo)
Mila's Song is a powerful and emotional play that will leave you with a deep sense of understanding and connection. The story follows a mother on her journey through grief and loss, as she confronts the painful reality of losing her daughter. Through Audrey’s heart-breaking and triumphant story, we see the strength and resilience of the human spirit. This play is a celebration of love, family, and the power of forgiveness. It reminds us that although grief is a difficult and complex journey, we are not alone. Mila's Song is a must-see production that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
3. Gen (A devised work directed by Rix Haji-Loucas with Erica Weyer and Rachael-Ann van Wyk)
We only know how to raise our children from our own parents. This has been true for all of time. A viscous cycle that appears unbreakable. Gen takes a harsh look at how generational trauma can affect the human spirit, even if all is 'well' on the outside. A mother, a daughter, stuck in a seemingly never-ending struggle to break free from trauma. Does the cycle ever end?
4. Rou (with Ryan Rossouw, directed by Johan van der Merwe)

5. What have you done with the Garden? (with Penny Wolhuter, directed by Ignatius van Heerden)
What have you done with the garden? is a new interdisciplinary work choreographed by Penny Wolhuter with videography by Kim Wolhuter and direction by Ignatius van Heerden. It is about how humans are inextricably linked to nature, and how when we move away from it or try deny our wild side, we lose our souls. It explores the ritual of life and evolution with direct links to Wolhuter’s experiences in life. People need to learn to reconnect what we have with our past we need to move forward but continue to look back and never forget where we've come from.
6. Inversion (Performance Art with Monica-Lee Nortier)
Inversion is an explorative physical theatre/performance art piece that revolves around a young woman's journey of suffering and accepting her manic and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder. This piece aims to capture the emotional rollercoaster and internal struggles she faces.
