ABOUT

The lotus flower – a symbol of purity and rebirth – is representative of the new investment into orchestral music sparked by various post-pandemic projects nationwide. Join the Lotus Philharmonic Orchestra and baritone Emile Coetzee under the baton of Lesedi Sibanda in their inaugural concert: Rebirth - A Chamber Music Concert. The programme's opening lament – a reflection on loss and adversity – materialises itself in the works of Jean Sibelius and George Frideric Handel. These compositions reflect the destabilisation of classical music in the South Africa throughout the 2000s and the subsequent lack of an inclusive orchestral tradition. Classical music in the nation and the arts as a whole have seen a promising trajectory thanks to collective contributions by orchestras, festivals, government and investment into education. The programme's second half, which includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók and Alexander Glazunov, acts as a glimmer of hope, community building and the restoration of orchestral tradition and creative collaboration in the country. This August in Mzansi's captial a symbol of rebirth can be found in a lotus bud ready to blossom. Join us for an eventful evening of chamber music!
