ABOUT
Meet Denzil Africa
Denzil Africa, a name synonymous with musical excellence, is not just a professional pianist and musician but also a revered educator, versatile singer, composer, and arranger in both jazz and popular music.
Born in the vibrant city of Cape Town, Denzil has called Gqeberha his home for over two decades, where he's made an indelible mark on the music scene. His musical journey began with dedication and passion, culminating in a High Diploma in Jazz Performance and Education, awarded after three years at MAPP MUSIC ACADEMY and an additional year at the University of Cape Town in 1992.
Denzil's expertise extends to teaching seven vital subjects in the Jazz Curriculum, including Harmony, Jazz Theory, Jazz Piano, Ear Training, Improvisation, Arrangement, and Jazz Ensemble. But Denzil Africa is more than just a musician and educator; he's a force of change in his community. In 1999, he founded the first-ever jazz music school at Dower College, benefiting over 600 underprivileged youth and creating jobs for educators through the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture.
One of his most notable achievements was composing, singing, and performing the first Nelson Mandela Bay song, "Siyabambile," which gained international recognition when featured on SA Airways flights and at Port Elizabeth Airport in 2002. Denzil's accolades continue with his award-winning song "INSPIRE" in 2004, recognized by ALGOA FM as the Best East Cape song. He's graced stages with musical giants like George Benson and Donald Harrison from New Orleans and earned his spot as the opening act for international sensations Kenny and Chante Lattimore, chosen by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
With two successful albums, "OUT OF AFRICA" and "WOMAN," Denzil's music has resonated across South Africa and beyond, with "WOMAN" selling an impressive 12,000 copies. As a registered member of SAMRO, SAMPRA, and RISA, Denzil actively educates the youth about their music rights, ensuring they are not exploited. He's an advocate for fair treatment of musicians and was instrumental in saving taxpayers' money by challenging unfair practices in events and festivals.
Denzil Africa's impact goes far beyond music; he restores pride, positivity, dignity, and motivation to underprivileged youth through his jazz music projects. Many of his students have achieved their dreams, performing across South Africa and around the world.
In summary, Denzil Paul Africa is not just one of the finest musicians and educators in Gqeberha; he's a symbol of inspiration, transformation, and musical brilliance. Come and meet Denzil Africa & The Vusa Band at the One Room on the 11th of November.
