Benoni North Open Gardens
ABOUT
This is the first time that an Open Gardens show has been organized in our area we are a rural community living on smallholdings with most properties being 5 acers in size. Most of the residents use their properties for agricultural activities. The area is a peaceful oasis on the outskirts of Benoni and in close proximity to Kempton Park. There are some beautiful gardens in our area. We have a community initiative called Helm. This is a dedicated group of community members who give up their time to help out in the community to better the lives of our community.
Some of the activities they do include fighting crime, firefighting, helping out at accident scenes, cutting back fallen trees after a storm, helping our municipal contractors with sorting out electrical and water problems and wildlife rehabilitation. They often work hand in hand with the emergency services, municipal workers and SAPS to resolve issues. Funds raised from our Open Gardens will go towards helm for communication and safety equipment. Our local nursery kazamingi will be putting on a display with their green industry partners on the saturday 4th november.
There are 3 other nurseries in the area that will be open for plant sales on the saturday. All of the gardens and nurseries are within a 5 km radius.
Our gardens are larger than the average town garden and boost flower vegetable and fruit gardens with the main focus on self-sustainability. Gardening in our area can be challenging due to harsh winters and heavy frost.
The ground is often boggy in the summer months after the rains. The area is primary a grassland and wetland area. Birdlife in the area is prolific and we have a number of raptors and owls in the area. There are also small mammals which include meerkat, gannets, porcupine and hare. We are home to the giant bull frog.
The gardens are all eco- friendly and the environment is tranquil and peaceful.
