ABOUT

Reza Khota Quartet

?Smaller jazz ensembles have always been a vehicle for great jazz players and composers. The jazz world is built on the history of great trios, quartets and quintets in which composers/improvisors have had the opportunity to develop their ideas, and test them night after night on the bandstand. This guitar led quartet follows in the tradition, drawing also on the particularities of electric guitar bands. Khota’s compositions are harmonically expansive, and the bands telepathic interpretations are rhythmically potent and always reaching out for the groove. Coming from a foundation in rock, 70’s fusion and jazz, Khota is never short of gritty overdriven sounds that recall the psychedelic offerings of Hendrix or the Mahavishnu Orchestra—a sound that drummer Jonno Sweetman demonstrably understands—hitting the drums at times, with the force of Bonham. The band’s sonic palette also explores the quieter, introspective realms, inviting the listener to discern subtlety, articulation and phrasing or just to float in the waves of sound. Reza Khota quartet have two albums: Transmutation (2014) Liminal (2018) "Khota delivers laser-focused solos that give off searing heat." Dan Bilawsky - All About Jazz "Khota is a soaring and stinging player." Don Albert - Artslink.co.za "Hearing Khota searching for a segue between the rhythm and the melody, by modulating his solos into ecstatic micromodal improvisations on lengthy 10- minute plus compositions such as Eclipse, Contact and Freedom’s Dance, is nothing short of sublime."
