The Exterminaton of Wildness: A Conversation between Barnaby Barratt and Roger Ballen

Sun Dec 3, 17:00 - Sun Dec 3, 19:00

Inside Out Centre for the Arts

ABOUT

Join us on Sunday, December 3rd for a captivating conversation that will delve into the idea of the "extermination of wildness" through the unique artistic perspective of world-renowned artist Roger Ballen and the profound insights of internationally eminent psychoanalyst Barnaby Barratt. This event promises to be a transformative exploration of human sensibilities and the inherent limitations we face when confronting the untamed, uncontrolled, or unpredictable forces within and around us.

This thought-provoking dialogue will take place within the context of Roger Ballen's ongoing exhibition at his recently established Inside Out Centre for the Arts. Titled "End of the Game," the show comprises photographs, archival materials, and installations that shed light on the ruthless and relentless efforts to eradicate African wildlife.

The artist will respond to a presentation by Barnaby Barratt, titled "The Extermination of Wildness," which will illustrate how the Eurocentric project of dominating nature, both within ourselves and in the external world, may, in fact, foreshadow the extinction of our species. These allusions will reveal how the rationalist endeavor to eliminate the irrational, whether within the field of psychoanalysis or in our broader sociocultural landscape, leads to the 'suicidality' of psychic life and the ecocidal destruction of nature, ultimately bringing about the termination of the human condition.

In light of these concepts, Ballen will elucidate how embracing our primal instincts is a fundamental aspect of his creative process and artistic vision. The artist's distinctive aesthetic, with its unsettling portrayal of the human condition, its allusions to the unconscious mind and the surreal, invites us to "unearth the chaos and darkness lurking just beneath the surface of the human mind."

Don't miss this exceptional opportunity to witness an exchange between two luminaries in the fields of psychoanalysis and art.
