Saint Cecilia Music Safari

Sat Nov 25, 16:00 - Sat Nov 25, 18:30

Variety of Venues on The Braak, Stellenbosch.

ABOUT

The newly found choir school in Stellenbosch, the Cape Choral Academy (CCA), is hosting a festival of sacred music during the last weekend of November. The name of the festival comes from Saint Cecilia, who is the patron saint of music and musicians. Saint Cecilia Day is celebrated worldwide on 22 November, and feasts associated with her are usually around that time. Many poets and composers have been inspired by her life, with the earliest music dedicated to her dating from the fourth century.

On the afternoon of Saturday 25 November, some of the historical buildings around 'Die Braak' will feature in a Safari Concert, where patrons will be regaled with music and poetry in the Rhenish Church, the Church of St Mary’s-on-the-Braak, and the P J Olivier Art Centre. The doors of the Rhenish Church will open at 15:30, with the first performance of 30 minutes starting at 16:00 in this historic church. The concert will be followed by a short walk across the Braak to the St Mary’s Church, where the second concert will be from 17:00 to 17:30. Here will see the CCA debut the world premier of Emeritus Professor Winfried Lüdemann’s latest composition. The last of the three small concerts will be in the hall of the P J Olivier Art Centre at 18:00, and will be followed by refreshments.

Artists taking part are the CCA Choir under Xander Kritzinger, singer Lauren Dasappa, the Stellenbosch University Brass Quintet, actress Elsabe Daneel, pianist Liza Joubert, and organist Diederick Basson.

This festival is the brain child of Liza Joubert, pianist and Head of Music of the CCA, who is well known for her colourful and unique musical interpretations.
