ABOUT

In a programme aptly titled The Architect and the Sleepwalker, critically acclaimed South African pianist presents music by Alexander Johnson, Ludwig van Beethoven (the architect), and Franz Schubert (the sleepwalker):

  • Three Incantations - Alexander Johnson
  • Sonata No. 21 in C major 'Waldstein' - L. van Beethoven
  • Sonata No. 19 in C minor - F. Schubert

Franz Schubert’s monumental Sonata in C minor, written during his final years before his untimely death at the age of 31 and dealing with the difficult concept of lateness – it is known that Schubert knew he did not have much time left and he writes here often as in the dreamlike state of a sleepwalker, a description borrowed from renowned pianist Alfred Brendel.
