Its time to celebrate yarnie culture with the best the South African yarn industry has to offer.

Learn how to Spin on a Drop Spindle with Michelle Hutchinson

In this course you will learn a bit about the history of spinning, different fibre preps and different methods of spinning. Then we will practice spinning a drop spindle before adding fibre and making your first yarn!

PIN LOOM WEAVING

Beginner Pin Loom Weaving with Sonja van Wyk - DesignsbySofiya

Students will learn different ways to weave on a pin loom.

Techniques that will be taught in this workshop:

90 degree weft and warp weaving on the pin loom. 2 ways of finishing off to remove (square shape)

READING CROCHET PATTERNS

Demystifying Crochet Patterns with Lynne Adriaanse

ABOUT THIS COURSE:

This course will take you through a brief description of the different types of crochet patterns but will go into detail when it comes to the differences in terminology of written patterns. 

Once the theory is covered, the practical starts. Students will crochet small samples based on instructions written in the different terminologies, thereby giving them a practical understanding. Once this workshop is completed, students will be able to read almost any crochet pattern.

BEGINNER PUNCH NEEDLE

Beginner Punch Needle with Adrienne Antonites

ABOUT THIS COURSE:

Students will be taken through all the aspects of a Punch Needle, its uses and the different types. Students will be working on an A4 Artists canvas that has been stretched with hessian, and will go home with a finished piece.

* Students may either select an image from our collection or bring along their own image.
* We supply 2 x 50g of brushed cotton. Students will learn how to thread the needles and be taken through the processes of punch needling:
* How to punch
* Mistakes, how to correct them.
* How to create different patterns and texture heights.
* The types of fabric suitable.
* How to care for and use the products.

Students will have the use of a studio Punch Needle. These punch needles will be available at The Yarn Tree in the exhibitor marketplace should students wish to purchase one to take home.

POLYMER BUTTONS + BROOCHES

Polymer Fiber Artistry: Crafting Yarn-Inspired Buttons + Brooches with Mariana Combrinck

Students will learn a method where polymer clay is extruded into long threads and used as yarn to create either brooches, buttons or other jewellery items.
 

COURSE EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginners – Knowledge of polymer clay and how to condition clay is useful, but not essential to attending this workshop

AMIGURUMI WITH PROJECTARIAN

Pufferfish Purse with innovative amiguriumi designer, Jessie Van In - PROJECTARIAN

Step inside Projectarian’s menagerie and let’s crochet a fanciful beast! In this master class we’ll craft a small drawstring pouch in the shape of a fish that you can attach to the inside or outside of your handbag, to your gym bag, belt loop – or anywhere – to keep small items handy, such as your keys, AirPods or lip balm. This pufferfish purse is as useful as it is cute, and you’ll even have the option to add spines to turn your puffer into a prickly pufferish!
 

Techniques that will be taught in this workshop:
The class will cover a variety of techniques including using a running stitch marker, crocheting surface stitches, basic sewing, basic colour-work, and crocheting with double strands of yarn to create interesting colour combos. You’ll crochet the colour-work without carrying unused yarns around the entire body, and you’ll learn how to crochet a chain with no loose end to weave in. As a newbie to amigurumi or a seasoned pro, you’re guaranteed to learn something new while having fun!

INTERLOCKING CROCHET

Interlocking Crochet Stash Buster Coasters with Lynne Adriaanse

ABOUT THIS COURSE:
Interlocking Crochet (also known as Wacky Weave / Interlocking Filet Crochet / Intermesh crochet) is a method of interlocking 2 filet meshes to create a picture. The technique, though it uses basic crochet stitches (chains and Double Crochets (US terminology) is suited to intermediate to advanced crocheters.

In this Stash Buster Coaster workshop, students will create a symmetrical design with mug indents in either a square or circle shape, based on Lynne’s mug rug designs. Students will learn to crochet one of these designs to use up spare bits of yarn by creating something functional for the home. Coasters are also a great gifting idea for any occasion! Students will be taken through the use of solid stitches and the basics of interlocking crochet.

This design is small and easy enough to complete for those who are new to interlocking crochet.

Introduction to Mosaic Knitting with Lee-Anne Hyslop

Love the Nightshift Shawl? Students will learn the principles of mosaic knitting and discover this easy and effective way to do colour work.


Techniques that will be taught in this workshop:

BRING WITH YOU ON THE DAY:

* An open mind.
* A notebook and pen or pencil for taking copious notes.
* 5 to 7 yarns in a variety of colors, including a fingering weight and a lace weight each in different fibers like mohair and silk to be combined into a heavier weight.
* Note: Choose a color palette that is cohesive but include one color you wouldn’t normally use. More yarns can be added during class. Yarns should be chosen and wound prior to class.
* A variety of needle sizes from 4-6mm will be needed so bring a good selection (we recommend an interchangeable set).
* Preferred notions including: stitch markers, tapestry needle, tape measure, and scissors.
