ABOUT

Mark is an award-winning composer, and musician and plays piano and saxophone (at the same time!) as well as guitar, vocals, flute, and bass clarinet. He has just released a unique album called Solo, where he plays all the instruments by himself and his compositions pay Homage to the great South African jazz legends.

Mark was recently in New York City as part of a jazz/music cultural exchange residency project hosted by The Transatlantic Jazz Exchange.

Mark Fransman ‘Homage’  celebrates some of South Africa’s most iconic jazz musicians and seeks to spotlight them as national treasures. The music pays homage to such greats as Zim Ngqawana, Winston Mankunku, Hotep Galeta, Sibongile Khumalo, Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen, and Bheki Mseleku to mention but a few. Each ‘tribute’ comes in the form of an original composition (or suite), composed by Fransman.

The songs are inspired by the musicality and personality specific to each of these treasured musicians. The compositions reflect on Fransman’s personal & professional relationships with each dedicatee, some of whom have mentored Mark in his formative years.
