ABOUT
Phelo Bala, born on March 24th, 1991, in Cape Town, is a multi-faceted artist transcending genres, specializing in Afro-Soul, Jazz, and Pop. His musical journey commenced in the embrace of his church choir, where his innate talent blossomed under the influence of his mother and brothers Zwai and Loyiso. At the tender age of 14, Phelo, alongside his brothers, co-founded the internationally acclaimed Bala Brothers.
Following his sibling's path, Phelo immersed himself in the prestigious Drakensberg Boys Choir in KwaZulu Natal, eventually rising to deputy head boy and head of the choir. The prologue of his professional career unfolded with the release of the inaugural Bala Brothers CD in 2006, propelling him onto global stages, including England, Scotland, Japan, Australia, and Southern Africa. Phelo, both as a soloist and ensemble member, became a dynamic force in the music scene.
In 2011, he joined the illustrious Joyous Celebration group, marking a pivotal moment that not only enriched his performance repertoire but also ignited his prowess in songwriting. The crescendo of his career includes performances for luminaries such as Nelson Mandela, John Legend, Kenny Lattimore, Kirk Franklin, Samuel L Jackson, Thabo Mbeki, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Collaborations with musical luminaries like Lira, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sibongile Khumalo, Soweto Gospel Choir, and TKZee further embellish Phelo's artistic journey.
Influenced by an eclectic array of artists, including Simphiwe Dana, John Legend, Amy Winehouse, and Thandiswa Mazwai, Phelo envisions himself not only as a seasoned performer and composer but also as a music industry executive and producer. His dream encompasses establishing a lasting legacy in the music industry, a vision accentuated by his breakthrough moment – the realisation of recording his solo album after years of collaborative endeavours.
