Come and join us for a recital of music by the great French composers Gabriel Fauré, Frédéric Chopin and Louise Farrenc.

2024 marks the centenary of the death of Fauré in 1924. Fauré composed his violin sonata in 1875. It is considered one of the three masterpieces of his youth. Chopin wrote three pieces that featured the cello, leading up to a much more substantial masterwork: the Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, from 1845-46. The sonata was Chopin's last major composition. He dedicated the sonata to his friend, the cellist Auguste Franchomme. Together, the two played three movements of the piece at Chopin's final Paris concert on Feb. 13, 1848, just over a year and a half before the composer died.

Jeanne-Louise Farrenc was one of the most celebrated female piano virtuosos and composers of her era. Farrenc’s Trio for Cello, Flute, and Piano in E minor, Op. 45 (1856) is an example of her allegiance to the German masters. Between 1839 and 1862, she completed several sonatas, trios, quintets, a sextet, and a nonet for a variety of instrumental combinations. The E-minor Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano was the last of them.
