Caramel & Ray Gunz Reunion

The Caramel and Ray Gunz story is decades in the making. Caramel started out as one of the original hip hop heads. A b.boy initially and as hip hop intended for all heads, branched out into an additional element, music production. He was a founding member of the prolific hip hop collective Black Noise and went on to become one of the most important producers the hip hop culture and the South African music industry could ever have hoped for. His understanding of mood and sound creates deeply immersive rhythms, hypnotic to the soul and enriching to the mind. The South African hip hop landscape would be barren if Caramel was omitted. Ray Gunz is a life traveler, never wanting to be stereotyped and living many experiences. A creative at heart. His hip hop journey started as a b.boy, later becoming a member of the Afrika Bambataa’s Zulu Nation and contributing extensively to the Nicro youth program in the 90’s. Later he would become a member of the very Black Noise, Caramel was a founding member of. Ray Gunz would become a quintessential creative influence in the group and musical director of eight of the best studio works the group would create. During one of those studio sessions Caramel and Ray Gunz would collaborate on the “Circle of Fire”, album and found that their creative styles were complementary. They would work together on many occasions after, and this would eventually give birth the “Caramel and Ray Gunz” album.

The Album

The project was initiated as a documented example of what hip hop could offer in terms of quality music through a well-directed and produced project. Caramel produced, arranged and provided vocals while Ray Gunz submitted vocals with interesting runs and groove sitting rhyme cadence. Creating an offering that is timeless, deliberately without timeline references. This is something South African musicians find hard to do. The album has been described as equal in quality and production value as greats like, “Black Sunday” or “Lethal Injection”, although that was not the aspiring mark. Even today, the album can be heard on airwaves, and listeners don’t turn off the radio!
