Title of lecture: Decolonising National Anthems: the search for new intelligibilities.
In this paper, I ask what it would take to decolonise African national anthems. This is extracted from my current reflections on how to move from decolonial critique to practice / praxis. My interest is on the complex and resilient nature of coloniality, especially in the manner in which it is deeply archived in the DNA of liberation heritage such as song. Centring extraversion and the push to find conceptual frameworks that render African experiences intelligible as scaffolding, use several examples, to demonstrate the inherent contradictions and incoherence between discourses of liberation, independence and the extraverted nature of patriotic songs. I present the M`BÀN of the Bafut people as possible alternative patriotic song intelligibilities.
