[ALMOST SOLDOUT] Shibari Evening Cape Town: Performance

Fri Jul 26, 19:00 - Fri Jul 26, 23:00

Unit G19, Embodiment Rope Space

ABOUT

Embodiment Rope Space is a not-for-profit venue dedicated to exploring the erotic art of consensual restriction known as Shibari / Kinbaku / Bondage / Rope Work. We are a safe(r) space where informed consent, communication and care are paramount.

Come and relax with us while we watch an evening of decadence performances.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The evening will start with the doors opening at 18:40 and our performances promptly starting at 19:30. Doors will be closed at 19:15 so be sure to arrive on time. Before the performances start, you can chat, find your seats, have some drinks, and enquire about any rope or other goods on sale at our rope kiosk. The night will kick off with the following two performances:

19:30 - Sunga Konji
Sunga Konji uses Rope to explore intimacy and pleasure while prioritising comfort and joy. He's interested in a rope practice that is in conversation with continental topics and issues, centers Blackness without fetishism, and doesn't overly rely on establishing power dynamics in play.

21:00 - Sudo (he/they) & Fire Lily (she/her) & Nightelf Kitsune (she/they)
Sudo has been a student of Kinbaku for many years and is part of Akechi Kanna’s study group and a student of Naka Akira. Fire Lily is a rope bottom with a rich insight into the psychology of rope. They have been tying together for years and host the private Cape Kinbaku Salon together. In their rope bondage, they explore deep states of the beauty of surrender, torment, and connection.  Nightelf Kitsune / Dominique has been an avid fan, willing participant, and lover of Ropes/Shibari for several years. This stems from their early fascination with the Human Body - its physical capabilities - and also testing its personal limitations. Dominique has enjoyed various escapades into Hook Suspension, Rope Suspension as well as Scarification over the years. She has participated in various Shibari projects and performances including Embodiment shows and VIP Mavericks S&M Night. She is always happiest performing within the binds of loved ones and friends. This performance brings together their intense, aesthetic, and collaborative improvisational expression of Kinbaku.

Events start promptly at 19:30. Please DM us via Instagram if you are running late. Doors open at 18:40 and are closed at 19:15. We will be strict about this because late-coming can be very disruptive to those in the space. Pre-booking is essential (cash on the night is available by arrangement via Instagram DM). Please have your tickets ready to be scanned on arrival.

Embodiment Rope Space is a welcoming and safe(r) space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. We practice rope communally and host occasional workshops for upskilling the community. Rope is never safe, there are only ways to do it more safely.

Please study the FAQ and Ethos of our space on our website, www.embodimentropespace.co.za, before attending.

Ropey things for sale:

We have limited treated rope from Sudo Jute (variable prices: R400 - R500 per 8m hank) and safety shears for sale.

RULES

1. Don’t be late.
2. Respect the space. Leave no trace - whatever you bring, take it back with you.
3. Ego has no place here. Learn and share with humility.
4. Ask for people’s pronouns and use the ones you are given.
5. No shoes. Keep underwear on at public events. Nipples may be free.
6. Do not make unsolicited comments about anyone else's body.
7. Do not take any photos of anyone in attendance without consent.
8. Do not post photos without the consent of EVERYONE in the photo.
9. Do not reveal the identity of anyone you meet in the space once you leave. Many people prefer anonymity.
10. Be mindful of making noise in the space when others are tying around you, this includes loud talking and laughing.
11. Be discrete when moving through other parts of the premises. Clothes are optional in the space but not outside the door.
12. Please stay home if you are feeling unwell.
13. Please do not use any recreational drugs before coming or while on site.

Since this is a performance evening, we have additional rules in place to ensure that the flow of the performances and the performers themselves are not disrupted. From 19:30 in addition to the above, please abide by the following:

1. Don't be late for performances. Be respectful to the performers
2. Be mindful of making noise in the space during performances, this includes loud talking and laughing. Take jokes outside.
3. Give performers space during the 15 minutes following the performance. After this, you may approach them to discuss the performance - unless stated otherwise on the night. Get their consent before engaging with them.
4. No photography of performances will be permitted other than by the designated event photographer.

FAQ

What is Shibari/Kinbaku/Bondage?
The art of binding the body of a consenting adult.

Is rope/Shibari always sexual?
Rope/Shibari has many benefits and practitioners outside of the sexual paradigm. For some, it is about pushing their bodies not unlike engaging in strenuous exercise or extreme sports. For others, it is a way to reclaim their agency after trauma. It can also be a way to experience a connection with others without the scripts and expectations associated with genital contact. As long as what you are doing is consensual and intentional, we consider it healthy and valid.

What should I wear?
This is a performance environment, not a sexual one, so crotches are to remain covered. Other than that, you are free to wear whatever you like. Comfy, sexy, sporty, fetish - as long as your booty is covered, you are welcome here.

Can I also tie at this event?
Given that this is a performance space, the only rope that will be practiced will be by the performers themselves. We have rope for sale and you are welcome to approach our team if you are interested in learning as we have jams, classes, and workshops to accommodate this. This means NO tying will be allowed by audience members at this event.

What should I expect on the night?
We hope to create a safe and intimate space where you will get the rare opportunity to experience rope by watching engaging performances. Both performances will be rooted in different approaches and philosophies and will give you the chance to see the variation there can be to rope. You will also have access to our team and the performers in the evening to chat about rope and connect with the community in a low-pressure environment.

Note on accessibility:
We believe rope is for every body. At the same time the building we are currently occupying does not allow for wheelchair access or has accessibility to ground floor ablution facilities. This is an ongoing negotiation with the current landlords.
