Of Love and Light, an evening of beautifully light choral music by Aurum Cantores, which will include some brand-new compositions by members of the group.

Aurum Cantores is an ensemble based in Stellenbosch that consists of eleven talented singers. All members are musicians in their own field ranging from choral conductors to organists, guitarists, flautists, recorder players, clarinetists, and pianists. The ensemble was formed in 2023 as result of a project for a small eisteddfod. They were promptly asked to perform at a collaborative concert, “A Choral Encouter”, between the Limburger Domsingknaben and Laerskool De Tyger Senior Choir, in October of the same year. This concert sparked the idea that this ensemble could continue well beyond their initial intention.

With this newfound spark and dedication, the ensemble has recently recorded the “ensemble” part for the Stellenbosch University Drama Department’s production of Pinocchio, in which they sang new music written by the award-winning composer and lecturer at Stellenbosch University Music Department, Dr Antoni Schonken. The ensemble already has a prospective concert in the third quarter of 2024, which includes a work by Caroline Shaw that would be a debut in South Africa, alongside the Aurum Cantores String Quintet. Aurum Cantores’s mission is to not only sing existing repertoire, but also to create a space for upcoming composers to have their works debuted and recorded.
