ABOUT

In exploring how artists interact with and position themselves in different communities, HEAT Festival Director, Mary Corrigall will introduce artists, Songezo Zantsi at Vela Projects, Nina Kruger at the AVA and Nazeer Jappie at 99 Loop. The participating galleries presenting exhibitions are; The AVA, Christopher Moller, Ebony/Curated, Eclectica Contemporary, Kalashnikovv, 99 Loop Gallery, Michaelis Galleries, Nel Gallery, Reservoir Projects, Sisonke Gallery, Under the Aegis, Union House by Spier Arts Trust, Vela Projects and WORLDART.

Songezo Zantsi is a multidisciplinary mixed-media artist, currently focused on painting. Drawing on a long history of realism in painting, Zantsi's paintings depict human interactions that are reflective of the societal realities surrounding the artist, aiming to magnify the culture of a society. Referencing scenes photographed by Zantsi himself, Zantsi creates links between the contemporary day and the recent past. He aims to create "a visual archive of life in South Africa." Zantsi has previously exhibited at Vela Projects (Inkumbulo, 2022) and is featured in Latitudes Online.

Nina Kruger is a contemporary textile artist who incorporates natural and organic materials into her artwork to explore concepts like impermanence and unpredictability. Kruger uses collected natural fibres and materials to weave sculptural installations. She also touches on post-humanist theories and explores sustainability and ecology within her practice. Kruger has a background in the commercial textile industry and holds an MA from The University of Poznan in Poland. Additionally, she was the recipient of the Barclays 2015 L'Atelier Merit Award and is the founder of That Island Art Collective in Pretoria.

Nazeer Jappie is a multidisciplinary artist whose focus is on performance, sculpture, and painting. Jappie's works primarily function as self-portraits, creating different narratives inspired by everyday life and then inserting himself into them. He is interested in highlighting the absurdity of routine, amplifying their surreal nature to better showcase this. Jappie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Art from Cape Town Creative Academy (2020) and has exhibited at Blank Projects in 2023.
