ABOUT
Thesis ZA comprises of creative writer Ayanda Charlie and the multiple talents of saxophonist, keyboardist and composer Ondela Simakuhle. The duo was formed in 2013 and was dubbed OkayAfrica’s Jazz Innovators of 2019, also landing a spot on the Mail and Guardian 200 Young South Africans list for their work as songwriters. Their debut album Sondela, which recently won the 2023 Basadi in Music “Jazz Artist of the Year” award, displays the duo’s classical training, arrangements that accentuate classical and African instrumentation, silk-like vocals and lyrics with rich cultural references and Xhosa expressions.
