Folklore Festival returns in 2024 for its third edition with a rich lineup of storytellers as the community comes together again to share in our culture and heritage.
Join the conversation on our creative platform #WeTheFolk for 30 days of Contemplating 30 years of Freedom in 3 Cities on 17 August 2024 at the NSA Theatre | 55 Melle Street, Braam Park with an immersive screening of ‘Re-membering IGAMA?’ by multi-hyphenated storyteller SLINDILE MTHEMBU and to close, SIYA MAKUZENI solos and duets on trombone, vocal loops and is joined by Dalisu Ndlazi on double bass.
‘Re-membering IGAMA?’ is an award-winning (filmed) theatre play written and directed by SLINDILE MTHEMBU which narrates the story of five women who live in a well-
behaved in the South African community. The aim is to see if the women can break out of the stereotype or whether they conform to the boxed post-colonial South African Society.
SLINDILE MTHEMBU's artistic endeavours mirror her commitment to disrupting prevailing norms and shedding light on the complexities that Black women face. Her work serves as a powerful resistance, challenging established narratives and striving for the recognition and amplification of Black womxn's voices within hegemonic spaces. Her work reflects the intersectionality of Black womxn's lived experiences and seeks to disrupt one-dimensional narratives depicting Black women and their lives. Her passion for blending theatre, dance & film is an ongoing experiment in her praxis of creating.
