ABOUT

Folklore Festival returns in 2024 for its third edition with a rich line up of storytellers as the community comes together again to share in our culture and heritage.

Join the conversation on our creative platform #WeTheFolk for 30 days of Contemplating 30 years of Freedom in 3 Cities on 5 September 2024 at ARTISTRY, Sandton, Johannesburg in a Folktales and Archiving workshop by the Creative Brain, MPUMI MAYISA & a Sonic Offering on the decks from WOMLAMBO; who gathers sounds that return us to the water.

MPUMI MAYISA is a cultural worker, curator, researcher and art writer, based in Johannesburg. Her practice is rooted in the use of curatorial curiosities to uncover the archive, decode its articulations of personal and collective memory as well is exploring the alternative realities that it presents. She has worked as a junior curator at the The NIROX Foundation for the annual Winter sculpture exhibition, in collaboration with the Swedish sculpture park, Wanås Konst/The Wanås Foundation. (2017- 2019). Curator at Gallery Fanon (2021), Curator at the Bubblegum Gallery for FNB Art Joburg in(2021). She currently writes for ArtThrob and the Bubblegum Club publication. Her curatorial projects include Bathini Abafazi? (Gallery Fanon, Johannesburg), A Crescendo of DayDreams (Bubblegum Gallery for FNB Art Joburg).

WOMLAMBO's developing sonic offerings have become an extension of her practice as a cultural worker/ curator. The amorphous soundscapes are an exploration of the intersection of nature + ritual. Moving between the sacred and secular, she draws from genres such as pan-African, 'worldwide' (or rather quasi-traditional, intercultural, and indigenous music from non-western countries), electronica, IDM, alternative, ambient, new age and jazz. She has played in spaces across Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town such as Blk Hlth, Beats by Her, P_ssy Party, SSS, Stevenson gallery, For Art Sake, FNB Art Joburg and First Thursdays amongst others. Womlambo has also played at festivals such as Among the Lillies Women’s Festival and Queertopia.za and worked with brand events by Africa Bank, Jägermeister Night Embassy and Nike.
