ABOUT
Join us on the 26th of June.. Starting at 18:30, guests will be welcomed with drinks upon arrival as we set the stage for an immersive experience celebrating the intersection of film, music, and photography.
Event Flow:
1. Introduction to "Reclaiming Darkness" The evening begins with an introduction to "Reclaiming Darkness", a poignant photographic exhibition by Simphiwe Fuwe Molefe. This compelling body of work chronicles how South Africans navigate the pervasive issue of loadshedding, offering a raw and intimate glimpse into this shared national experience.
2. Screening of Short Films Following the exhibition, guests will gather for a special screening of short films, featuring "Vinyl on Bones" and "Beauty in the Dark." These films delve into themes of healing, beauty, and the human spirit, set against the backdrop of Johannesburg.
- Vinyl on Bones explores music as a medium of healing, following Yanda, a music healer who perceives the city's rhythms with her ears, transforming the mundane into sublime beauty through magic realism.
- Beauty in the Dark takes us to an art exhibition in Joburg, where a chance encounter between a fashionable attendee and a waiter leads to a profound conversation on the essence of art and beauty, echoing the powerful "Black is Beautiful" movement.
3. Director’s Talk and Live Film Scoring The screening will be accompanied by a brief talk from the films’ director, Malusi Bhengu, offering insights into their creative processes and the themes explored in their work.
The live film scoring by our band, will create a unique, immersive cinematic experience. The band features renowned musicians Malcom Jiyane, Papi Moshodi, and Nathi Mathunjwa, whose live performance will bring the films' narratives to life through their evocative, compositions. This live scoring session promises to be an unforgettable fusion of sight and sound.
