Food Systems Walking Tour: Cape Town CBD

Sat Jul 27, 10:00 - Sat Aug 3, 13:00

Starting point: Corner of Shortmarket and Bree Streets

ABOUT

Join a small group walking tour that will reveal the intricate connections and overlays between Cape Town’s ecological systems, history and food lineages, from pre-colonial to present day.

Created by the SAUFFT and the tour guides hosting, in collaboration with historian and former head of the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership, Andrew Boraine, the tour sheds light on how history shapes the modern-day food system in Cape Town and how the contemporary city shapes our interactions with food.

Experience the vibrant food cultures on the streets and in the urban core, including tastes of classic Cape Town street food.

The walk takes participants on a loop through the city starting at Heritage Square, taking in locations such as Greenmarket Square, the station deck, the Golden Acre and the Company’s Gardens. You will never see (or taste) the city in the same way again!

The ticket price includes food tastings.

GUIDES

Specialist Cape Town guides Keith Sparks and Adeola Oyebade guide these walks.

Keith Sparks grew up in the politically-turbulent 1970s and 80s in Crawford on the Cape Flats, where community structures like the street committee played a vital role in activism. The lessons learned in grassroots organizing continue to influence his work today, especially during challenging times. Keith’s global travels have exposed him to diverse forms of art, which continues to shape his visceral responses to murals, music, and spoken word. Keith has travelled and explored countries like England, Ireland, Cuba, with a special memory of participating in the Rio Carnival in 2010. Embracing walking and public transport while traveling allows for deeper sensory experiences and meaningful interactions with different cultures, fostering a genuine connection with the places visited and it is this which inspires his participation in the Food Indaba Cape Town CBD food system walks.

Adeola Oyebade is the CEO of Kalesanwa, a co-operative founded with the aim of assisting members of the immigrant communities in Cape Town. These communities are often faced with hardships, sometimes precipitated by their exclusion and causing them to be relegated to the periphery of meaningful economic participation. Adeola’s work involves mitigating these challenges by leading a solitary savings, loan and investment scheme among a membership who are mostly informal traders operating in the Cape Town CBD. Partly as a result of this work, Adeola has deep inside knowledge of the Cape Town CBD, and in particular of the food systems that support this particular set of communities. As a tour guide, Adeola brings access to many of these invisible parts of the city, most especially on the Food Indaba food systems walking tour.
