ABOUT

A part of the Power and Hunger conference series

THE EVENT

This 90-minute Zoom webinar puts the spotlight on Power and Hunger as it plays out in key African centres, including Mbale, Uganda; Tamale, Ghana; Lusaka, Zambia; Bukavu, DRC, and Quelimane, Mozambique.

Speakers from these cities reflect on how hunger is used as a weapon to project power in support of armed conflict; and how power is used to normalise or render invisible the persistent hunger of a portion of the population, whether ethnic minorities or the poor.

They reflect on how these strategies impact immigration, food production, politics and social development, and how their cities are in turn responding through for example, policy, citizen mobilisation, and urban development strategy. Together with moderator Paul Currie from ICLEI Africa, the panelists look at how each city responds differently based on their specific contexts, and pull out key insights that can help us understand some of the key forms of resistance to the weaponising of hunger.

The webinar is presented out of the Cape Town TV studios in Observatory Cape Town as a collaboration between ICLEI Africa and the South African Urban Food and Farming Trust.
