Phase 1: Meet and Greet at Muizenberg Beach

Time: 9:00 AM

  • Welcome and Introduction: Begin your journey with a warm welcome from Chief Kingsley. Learn about the day's itinerary and the significance of Muizenberg in the context of indigenous history.
  • Opening Ceremony: Participate in a brief 10-minute ceremony on the beachfront to connect with the land’s spirit and set a reverent tone for the day.


Phase 2: River Path and Community Garden

Time: 9:20 AM

  • River Path: Start the walk by following the river path, which leads past the Muizenberg Indigenous Community Garden. Discover ancient medicinal plants and learn about their traditional uses.
  • Historical Insight: Chief Kingsley will share stories about the old ruins of a fort used by the Dutch East India Company, providing a glimpse into the colonial history intertwined with indigenous narratives.


Phase 3: Bushman Face Rock

Time: 10:00 AM

  • Bushman Face Rock: Arrive at the Bushman Face Rock, a significant site where we will spend 5 - 10 minutes reflecting. Hear stories about the rock’s cultural importance and the spiritual connections the Khoisan people have with this landmark.
  • Indigenous Stories: Learn about the daily life, spiritual beliefs, and practices of the Khoisan people, emphasising the interconnectedness of all living beings.


Phase 4: Water Catchment and Snack Break

Time: 10:30 AM

  • Water Catchment Area: Follow the path to the water catchment area, collecting water as the indigenous people once did. Understand the traditional significance of water and its role in daily and spiritual life.
  • Flora and Fauna: Along the way, Chief Kingsley will introduce various indigenous plants, explaining their significance and traditional uses.
  • Snack Break and Music: Rest at a scenic spot, enjoy a snack, and engage in a musical session with traditional instruments. Experience the joy and communal spirit of Khoisan music.


Phase 5: Bushman Face Cave

Time: 11:30 AM

  • Cave Exploration: Continue the journey to the Bushman Face Cave. This cave, overlooking Muizenberg and St. James, offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere.
  • Cultural Significance: Explore the geological formations and learn about the cave's historical and cultural importance to the indigenous people. Engage in traditional practices and rituals that connect you with the land and its ancient inhabitants.


Phase 6: Contour Path 

Time: 12:30 PM

  • Contour Path Walk: Follow the contour path, taking in the natural beauty and diverse ecosystem. Chief Kingsley will provide insights into the unique fynbos biome and local wildlife.
  • Community Connection: Learn about the modern-day descendants of the Khoisan and their efforts to preserve their culture and heritage. Hear stories of resilience and the revival of traditional practices.


Phase 7: Descent and Closing Ceremony

Time: 1:30 PM

  • Scenic Descent: Begin your hike back to the starting point, reflecting on the day's journey and experiences.
  • Closing Ceremony: Conclude the tour with a closing ceremony led by Chief Kingsley. Share your reflections and express gratitude for the journey.
