Africanising the Faith: Liberating Christianity from European Captivity

Christianity has been subject to European dominance of the faith for over a thousand years. However, over the last century as Christianity has increasingly transformed into a world religion at home in a multitude of contexts there has been an increasing dissatisfaction with a gospel clothed primarily in Western culture. The cry has resounded for a decolonised Christianity. The necessary work of Christian decolonial efforts has, to this point, largely focussed on a breaking down and exposing of this European captivity. But what will we build in its place? What might an African faith, freed from European captivity and rooted and cultivated in the rich soil of Africa look like?

Dr Harvey Kwiyani is a Malawian missiologist and theologian, currently leading ACTS 11 Project: The Centre for Global Witness and Human Migration at the Church Mission Society in Oxford, where he also leads study programs on African Christianity. He is the founder and executive director of Missio Africanus and the general editor of Missio Africanus: The Journal of African Missiology. He has authored several books, including Sent Forth: African Missionary Work in the West and Multicultural Kingdom: Ethnic Diversity, Mission and the Church. He received his PhD from Luther Seminary following research on the missiological (or theological) implications of the presence of African Christians in the United States.
