SAFETY GUIDELINES

These Safety Guidelines are provided for the safety of you and of others. Due to the numerous risks associated with driving a vehicle in the dunes, the guidelines are not comprehensive and common sense must still be applied:

  1. Only persons with valid driver’s license, in street legal vehicles, are permitted to drive at the event.
  2. While driving, ensure that safety belts are worn by all occupants in the vehicle.
  3. Ensure that there are no loose items in the vehicle.
  4. Use the golden rule for off-road driving – “as slow as possible and as fast as necessary”.
  5. Stay in the demarcated areas and trails in the dunes and do not venture into unknown areas on your own. (If you are not sure where to go, ask one of the officials or wait for a guide vehicle)
  6. Keep a continuous lookout for other vehicles and ensure that you do not enter a blind corner without ensuring that it is safe to do so. (Always expect the unexpected)
  7. Before reversing, ensure that there are no vehicles behind yours.
  8. Do not summit a dune before making sure that it is safe to do so. (A vehicle may be approaching from the other side or stuck or there may be severe drop on the other side of the dune)
  9. When following another vehicle, keep a safe following distance. When approaching an obstacle allow the vehicle in front of you to totally clear the obstacle before proceeding.
  10. Keep left for oncoming vehicles. If stakes demarcate a route, leave stakes with red flags to the left and leave green flags to the right.
  11. Obey safety instructions issued by the officials for specific obstacles or trail drives.
  12. Make sure that children are kept under supervision and strict control. (The driver is accountable for the safety of all occupants of the vehicle)
  13. The consumption of any intoxicating substances is prohibited. (“drinking and driving”)
  14. Respect the area and the privilege to use it. Act responsibly and do not litter or cause any chemical pollution. (Bins or black plastic bags are provided in strategic areas)
  15. Do not damage or drive over any vegetation as it plays an important role in the eco-system in the area.
